James Roca is an AI strategy and adoption leader focused on helping organizations identify where AI can materially improve business performance and translate those opportunities into production capabilities.
In his current role as IBM’s Worldwide AI Strategy & Adoption Leader, James works with senior executives, business leaders, data scientists, architects, product teams, and client-facing organizations to identify and develop high-value AI opportunities. His work spans AI strategy and adoption, domain-led opportunity discovery, AI economics, data science, solution design, and the path to production.
James brings a combination of business, economic, and technical experience to enterprise AI. He has spent more than a decade advising CIOs and senior executives on technology economics, enterprise strategy, and major investment decisions, while his AI work extends into feature engineering, predictive modelling, graph analytics, Generative AI, and production architecture.
Across his career, James has influenced more than $2.2 billion in strategic enterprise technology investments spanning infrastructure, software, cloud, and sourcing decisions. More recently, he built a $22 million qualified AI pipeline within six months by shifting AI conversations from technology-led use cases toward consequential business decisions, measurable outcomes, and production viability.
His current work focuses on making AI adoption more systematic by bringing domain knowledge into opportunity discovery, identifying the business decisions where additional intelligence can change outcomes, establishing the economics of those opportunities, and connecting the strongest candidates with a credible path to production. He also works across Transactional and Agentic AI and uses experience from client engagements to influence product, engineering, field, and go-to-market strategy.
James began his career as a software engineer at IBM’s Hursley Development Laboratory before moving into architecture and technical leadership roles internationally. In Greater China, he helped establish IBM’s software architecture practice and held a senior role within the China Development Lab, before going on to leadership positions across Singapore, Australia, and the United States. His career has since expanded from software engineering and large-scale enterprise architecture into technology economics, CIO advisory, data science, and enterprise AI.
He is a UK Chartered Engineer (CEng MIET) and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Materials Science and Engineering.
